Landmark SBS series Go Back To Where You Came From (3 x 60 mins) wins the coveted Rose d’Or Awards for Best of 2012 and best Factual Entertainment.

SBS Australia’s ground-breaking series, Go Back To Where You Came From (3 x 60 mins), has been awarded the coveted Golden Rose for Best of 2012 at the Rose d’Or Awards ceremony in Lucerne, Switzerland.

Produced by Cordell Jigsaw Productions Pty Ltd and Screen NSW for SBS Television Australia, the Final Jury chose the show not only for its entertainment value but for its cultural relevance. It is the first time an Australian production has won this prestigious prize.

The three-part documentary series also won the award in the factual entertainment category. SBS is the first Australian broadcaster to ever win, as well as be nominated in this category.

The series has also garnered local industry recognition, winning a TV Week Logie Award in 2012 for Most Outstanding Factual, two awards at the 2011 United Nations Association of Australian Media Peace Awards for best television documentary and for its promotion of multicultural issues, and has also won the award for Most Outstanding Coverage of Migration in the Media at the Migration Institute Awards in 2011.

Go Back To Where You Came From took six ordinary Australians on a journey to Iraq, Jordan, the Congo, Kenya, and Malaysia, tracing the paths of asylum seekers and refugees as they attempt to flee their own countries and find a new home abroad. The format seeks to humanise the refugee issue, with the participants walking in the shoes of refugees for a month.

A second Australian series is currently in production, due to air on SBS later this year. The format has been sold throughout Europe (Denmark, Israel, Netherlands, Germany, Sweden), South Africa and to BBC America. The format and Australian series are licensed globally by SBS International.
