After the Bay of Pigs fiasco Fidel Castro consolidates his power in Cuba and establishes close relations with the Soviet Union, turning Cuba into a socialist state. In October 1962 the U.S. realises that Cuba has allowed the Soviets to build missile sites from which they could launch nuclear missiles into the U.S. This leads to a crisis that is considered the closest the world has come to a nuclear war. During the following 20 years Cuba provides free education and free health services for its population as well as military and logistic aid to various liberation movements. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the Cuban revolution experiences its worst economic crisis. The continued U.S. embargo isolates the country, but Castro and his regime manage to survive by diversifying into other non-traditional areas, and seeking foreign investment in areas such as tourism. The work of a maternity unit is unpredictable and challenging. Staff must judge when to let nature take its course and when to intervene. From natural labours to emergency caesareans, the medical team must guide the families through this life experience. At Sydney's Canterbury Hospital, about 1500 babies are born each year in the maternity unit. Of the mothers who attend the hospital, nearly 80% of them are born outside Australia. The excitement and uncertainty, the fear and joy is intensified when you are in a new country and have little family support. The story of Dusko Popov, the Serbian double agent who inspired Ian Fleming to create James Bond. Dusko was from a wealthy Serbian family and had studied in Germany before the war. He was recruited as a German agent by a close university friend, but not being a supporter of the Nazis, he also offered his services to Britain. For the remainder of the war, he worked as a double-agent feeding the Germans misinformation created by the British. His cover as a playboy saw him partying and womanising between missions, a lifestyle he enjoyed. He famously warned the then head of the FBI Edgar J. Hoover of the attack on Pearl Harbour.
