The Commander Islands - The islands are situated east of the Kamchatka peninsula, and have a population of 800, all living in the same village, Nikolskoye. Life is hard for the islanders, as there are not many job opportunities, economic activity and financial help from the government, has now ceased. Loulan: The Sleeping Princesses - Along the massive mountainous border between Central Asia and India, the ancient trade route of the Silk Road skirts around one the world's largest deserts, the Taklamakan, in China. In this barren region, there is said to be an immense cemetery in the lost kingdom of Loulan. Despite extreme conditions, Idelisi Abuduresule, Director of the Archaeological Institute of Xinjiang , with his Sino-Japanese team, using maps made by the Swedish explorer Sven Hedin, set out to survey and excavate the mysterious "Devil's City". A great mound covered with tall, slender, decorated timber posts is clearly visible amongst the waves of surrounding sand dunes. The Conquest Of Cold - Today we take air conditioning for granted, but this program studies the history of cold, using vivid re-enactments as scientists and scholars compete to generate the coldest temperatures. Francis Bacon died of pneumonia due to exposure, after experimenting with ice. Daniel Farenheit and Anders Celsius created the first thermometers. Guillaume Amontons realised there was a limit to cold. That temperature is -459.67 F (-273.15 C) known today as "absolute zero." Michael Faraday worked out how to put gases like ammonia and chlorine under pressure to make them so cold they turned to liquid. It follows two teenagers, Acerola (Douglas Silva, City of God) and Laranjinha (Darlan Cunha, City of God), through their adventures, struggles and aspirations as they grow up in a Rio de Janeiro favela. Suelen's grandfather, Severo, is still waiting to be released from prison years after completing his sentence. Acerola and Laranjinha take a letter from Suelen's grandfather to President Lula in Brasilia in order to get him released.
