A beautiful song with meaningful lyrics accompanies collage of childhood images

A riveting new stage production of Jean-Philippe Rameau's last opera, composed at the age of 80. Abandoned for 242 years, it was performed in full for the first time in 1982. This 1763 Broque masterpiece speaks resonantly of the beauties of liberty and freedom of choice, recounting the mythological story of Queen Alphises's ordeal. Ordered by Fate to marry a Boréade prince, descendant of the North Wind, Queen Alphise (Barbara Bonney) is presented with two eligible choices: Calisis and Borilee. However, Alphise is in love with Abaris (Paul Agnew), a man of unknown parentage. She repeatedly rejects the Boréade princes and eventually abdicates the throne for the love of Abaris. Freddy Kempf arrives at the Chateau de Neuville at Gambais, walks down the hall toward the grand piano, sits down and comments on the technical difficulties he expects to encounter: "Chopin is trying to create a quicksilver effect with sound. I think it's almost as if he doesn't want the audience to hear he's playing lots of notes, there are constantly changing waves of sound. The third episode features Liu Xiaodong, a 45-year-old painter, who is one of the most successful artists in China today. His paintings sell for several million dollars. Liu Xiaodong is considered the leading "New Generation" figurative painter in China. The documentary follows him to the Gobi Desert where he painted his ten-metre-long, monumental landscape painting, Qinghai-Tibet Railway. The painting was recently shown at the Mary Boone Gallery, New York. It is a five-panel panorama painted in situ portraying two herdsmen leading their horses across an open plain.
