Insightful, passionate, emotional and educational. Whether you've just opened up your heart to football or have been born with it in your blood, this is well worth the read. Particularly those of you following Australian football at all levels.
Craig-I just Watched the friendly against New Zealand and late in the match when Mat McKay came on there were 3 ex MT Gravatt juniors in the Socceroos. Now I know it is not our top team but when was the last time 3 juniors from the 1 club (and almost the same age) played for the national team. Gordon Petersen
Any serious Australian football fan has to read this book. While I knew Craig knew his stuff in terms of tactics from watching the UEFA champions league games and shows etc, he goes into an altogether deeper depth and his insights and recommndations into making football in Australia a global power are very well thought out and written. SBS, do the football loving people of Australia a favour and send a copy of this book to every member and staff of the FFA!
I agree. He does indeed put soccer as most important sport in the world, this might have upset many traditional Aussie sports fans. But reality is that soccer is becoming the "COMMON SPORT" around the world and many newly developed nations invest a lot of money to catch up. I think Australia should not get behind in this movement and invest more attention and money into soccer and even host 2016 or 2020 world cup.
I've read the book, I love it, well done Fozz. I've had a quick read of the reviews and whilst most are passionate fans of our beautiful game others here just don't like debate, your entitled to your opinion "yes", however how can you say there is too much technical tactical jargon when you obviously know nothing about the game (you know who you are) enjoy your league or AFL, I have no interest in the slightest for games that players can change sports, what skill is envolved there ??. Great book Fozz cant wait for the next one.
As the late great john Warren once said "the game is to important for Australia, and any country not too be involved" Craig Foster has proven to be the perfect man to take over where John left off. Craig's passion for the game as an art form is poetic in itself. To hear Craig express this poetry in his new book FOZZ ON FOOTBALL is a joy in itself. This book outlines the crucial aspects that need to be attended to in Australia to make the country a world power in the Game. For the "true believers" as john used to call them, you will understand, but not always agree with all of the mans opinions. If you are new to the game, and are planning to watch the upcoming world cup, read this book to simply understand what all the "fuss" is all about. When you understand the beauty of the beautiful game, you join an elite crowd. This crowd being the majority of your fellow human beings. Then and only then will you "NEVER WALK ALONE" Steve Thorne 22/5/2010.
Put aside the author and review the book for what it is, that is what i'm doing. This book rehashes allot of what Craig has said already and as a long time viewer of the world game the book seemed very stale. What this book does do well is attack other sports without any reason, a low act considering the author is trying to gain support not lose it. I can't help but agree that Football should be in a better state than it is currently but do not bash other codes because they are successful, it makes you look quite the fool. Now I know the Author has allot of fans to defend him (i was one of them) so I hate to dwell on all the negatives of this book but the fact remains - these were the final impressions the book left me with. As I tried to sum up the book after reading it I was drawn back (as others have mentioned) to the fact words have been overused, this is not the lasting impression one wants after a legthy read. The author dwelled too much on technical, tactical jargon without expressing anything fresh. Talking like a world class manager is fine when you are one but in this case it comes across as an analyst trying too hard to be something he is not. Now i'm not saying he is not knowlegavle, far from it, but you will understand what I mean if you decide to read the book. I still have a measured amount of respect for Craig Foster but this book did little to prove he walks the walk.
An amazing book on australian football. You truely provide an insight greater than any other Australian. Your insight into youth football is amazing. As a youth coach I see the way parents (even if they are the nicest of people off the field) act on towards their kids and it is definately something that has to be changed.
Excellent book, I agree with every word you said as to what we need to do to improve. Just one point of detail on page 53, Hungary were not the first team to beat England on home soil, they were the first Continental team to do it. Scotland and Wales beat them previously. The first foreign team to beat them was Rep. of Ireland on 21/9/1949, 2-0 at Goodison Pk. However a very good book for anyone to read whether you have a passion for the game or not.
Fozz, I am a die hard soccer fan. My two girls play soccer, and my sister played for the Irish national team for ten years. I have watched you on SBS for years, your experience, professional and unbiased points of view, and articulate expression and knowledge of the game is of the highest standard. I have read your book, nothing has changed, a top notch read. You excel in your field - well done.
