Over seven documentaries, First Australians depicts the true stories of individuals - both black and white - caught in an epic drama of friendship, revenge, loss and victory in Australia's most transformative period of history.

We begin in 1788 in Sydney, with the friendship between an Englishmen (Governor Phillip) and a warrior (Bennelong) and end our tale in 1993 with Koiki Mabo's legal challenge to the foundation of Australia.

First Australians chronicles the collision of two worlds and the genesis of a new nation.

Hi Irene, apologies but you have been given the wrong information. The old retail DVD of First Australians did not have captions, but the current DVD DOES include English captions for the hard of hearing. Please check the back of the box to make sure you get the edition you want. NB There is also a version for teachers available through our education partner. Please go to the EDUCATION tab above for further information. Please discuss your request for a version with English captions with them before purchasing.

I had contacted the SBS shop about the subtitled DVD and the response was that there isnt any! As a deaf person and teacher, I am not able to access any of the spoken information on the DVD. I did ask about the television screening of the "First Australians" which had subtitles - the response was that it is an inhouse copy and not available for the public!

I haven't seen these yet (so can't rate them) but a friend asked if there is any information about the music in these programmes?

what a must see production - we relocated here for work and want to learn all we can of the history and culture of australia. This film provided an eye-opening journey and perspective we had not yet realized in our first 18 months in country.

Hi Anita, the subtitled version is now available but the subtitles are only in English. If you wish to purchase this version please be specific with your order request as there are currently two versions on the market with the same barcode - one has English subtitles and one has none. Make sure to specify that you want the subtitled version.

Hi Hilarie, First Australians is an All Regions DVD so it should play in the US. The DVD is in PAL format but the default format in the US is NTSC. You may need to check whether your DVD player is able to play PAL DVDs. Please visit our FAQ page for more information on PAL and NTSC DVD formats.<br>

Saw a demo dvd and it looks great. I live in the US and have concerns about region compatibility. When I tried to view the demo on my dvd player it would not read because of region incompatibility, so I used my computer, When I tried to view the preview on the product website, I got a message saying "geoblocked." Who is protecting what here? Can Americans watch this or are we forbidden for some reason?
