Overview

Race to Dakar details Charley Boorman's attempt at the rally and is a look at one of the most dramatic endurance events known to man that until now has been shrouded in an air of romantic mystery. Revving up his BMW F650 motorbike alongside the 766 other professional and aamateur competitors (252 bikes, 174 cars, 69 trucks), Charley Boorman waited anxiously on the starting line of the 28th Annual Dakar Rally on a cold New Year's morning in Lisbon. 7,000 miles separated Charley from the finishing line in Dakar on the West African coast; the calmness in Lisbon belied the perils facing him ahead, the unforgiving terrain of North Africa and the Sahara desert.

The DVD features the entire TV series, from the pre-trip preparation and race training, through to the highs and lows of Charley's Dakar trip. It contains a number of extras including unseen and extended footage, details on the building of the Dakar bike, photo gallery, exclusive post trip interview and much more. To ensure the entirety of the gruelling race itself is conveyed in the TV series, the action footage was captured by placing front and rear facing helmet cameras on Charley and each of the team, as well as having a rider travelling alongside filming footage and a dedicated cameraman flying between stages to present and record the colour and the behind-the-scenes drama of the adventure in full.

As mentioned this gives a good coverage to whats required to get in as a privateer, fitness, medical ect. But what you don't get is the other half of the team, Ewin McGregor. Charley without his side-kick at times falls short. Plus Charley, really underestimated the difficulty. That said its a really good DVD. If you liked Long way round, long waydown, its worth a look.

A really good insight into the Dakar Rally. This gives a great behind the scenes look at what its like racing as a privateer ... who we very rarely get to see. Very good as it also follows Simon Pavey a seasoned Dakar campaigner. Its amazingly that each year the organisers take thousands and thousands and thousands of hours of footage via helicopter, on the ground cameras, helmets mounted cameras on bike and in car/truck cameras and this is the ONLY DVD that is out there that properly covers the event. COME ON SBS ... why don't you put all the footage that you get given, add it to the in car/on bike/in truck footage and make a decent LONG DVD for us to watch as the standard Dakar DVD is very very disappointing (bought it last year and won't be buying again). Rant over .... if you love the Dakar, you'll love this. We just need more of them.
