Overview
It was the greatest catastrophe in naval history and left over 9000 dead - six times more than in the Titanic disaster.
Follow the desperate struggle of thousands of refugees to board the "Wilhelm Gustloff"; the murderous incompetence of rivaling authorities; the counterproductive, fateful interplay of four captains; the cataclysmic sinking of the torpedoed ship in the icy Baltic Sea.
The event two-parter portrays the tragic fate of the Wilhelm Gustloff. Based on historical facts, it follows the courageous captain Hellmut Kehding, who unflinchingly took on a daredevil mission to sail from Gdynia to Kiel. Although the ship was only allowed to carry 2000, nearly 9000 terrified and desperate refugees fleeing from the Red Army made it on board, fighting, clawing and boxing their way through. To make room for them, most of the lifeboats were left behind.

I watched this with interest as I remembered my mother telling me about how she lost nearly all of her family on the Gustloff - not only did they lose their home/farming land in Konigsburg (taken by the Russians and now called Kalliningrad) - the rest of her family were either killed due to the war or some that survived settled in Germany - my mother coming to Australia -while watching I called my Auntie in Germany who gave me the inside on this tragic accident. So so sad. There are still a few elderly ladies that can give you an insight surrounding this tragedy.
SBS should have more dramas like this. It was so much better than that stupid movie "Titanic", not only because it didn't have a stupid theme song sung by Celine Dion or that idiot director James Cameron running around yelling at everyone. I had no idea that this shipwreck had even happened and SO MANY people died; it is so sad to think about. Really good drama. Please keep movies like this coming.
