Overview

To farewell a living legend is never easy, especially when he has dominated the world's biggest annual sporting event for seven years. Lance Armstrong is the man in question and perhaps the sole reason for the increasing global popularity of the Tour de France in the 21st century.

In 2005, Armstrong ruled the roads - and not for the first time. From the ocean to the mountains and everywhere in between, the great American was unchallenged yet again. When he reached the finish line on the cobbled-surface of the Champs Elysees, it marked the end of an era never before seen in the Tour's rich 102 year history.

Once ranked an exclusive three week endurance test for French competitors and their European rivals, the Tour has truly developed into an international spectacle - one that has been embraced by a word-wide audience.

Although the Armstrong factor has played a huge role in raising the Tour's profile, the appearance of non-Europeans hasn't gone unnoticed. Ten Australians started from Noirmoutier-en-L’Ile on the Atlantic coast and after 21 days of toil all 10 successfully made it home to Paris. Robbie McEwen proved his status as the world's fastest sprinter and the emergence of Cadel Evans shook the foundations. While rubbing shoulders with the Tour's elite, the Victorian recorded the best overall result by an Australian since Phil Anderson in the 1980s.

The Tour de France is a unique ride of lifetime. Little wonder many call it the world's most beautiful event. Come and enjoy the ride!
