Overview

In this groundbreaking three part series, six ordinary Australians agree to challenge their preconceived notions about refugees and asylum seekers by embarking on a confronting 25 day journey.

Go Back to Where You Came From, Season 1 - Go Back to Where You Came From

Tracing in reverse the journeys that refugees have taken to reach Australia, they travel to some of the most dangerous and desperate corners of the world, with no idea what is in store for them along the way.

Deprived of their wallets, phones and passports, they board a leaky refugee boat, are rescued mid ocean, experience immigration raids in Malaysia, live in Kenyan refugee camps and visit slums in Jordan before ultimately making it to the Democratic Republic of Congo and Iraq, protected by UN Peacekeepers and the US military.

For some of them, it’s their first time abroad. For all of them, it’s an epic journey and the most challenging experience of their lives.

The DVD includes all three hugely successful episodes of the journey plus the live event The Response.

“One of the most remarkable pieces of factual television that we’ve ever seen in this country.” - Graeme Blundell, The Australian

I recently showed this documentary to my Year 9 class and was incredibly moved at the impact it had on my girls. I teach at a school that is made up of predominantly anglosaxon students and prior to showing this documentary it was not unusual for me to hear my students engage in cringe worthy racial slurs. In our discussions during and after watching 'Go back to where you came from' the girls eyes were completely opened up and many talked about how ashamed they felt that for years they had criticised refugees whilst they had never attempted to understand their situation. We are so lucky as Australians to live in a country with an abundance of opportunity, why not share it around? Why do some believe that other people are not worthy of such blessings simply because they were born into circumstance they were? I will continue to expose as many students as I can to this documentary and would recommend all students of highschool age watch this.

Pro-refugee propaganda, period. Not surprised leftists love it. No mention of a secret government report showing the main reason for refugees was 'economic deprivation', and most refugees dumping their passport, or a majority of refugees being unemployed and on welfare 5 years after they arrive in Australia.

A HUGE thank you to SBS for showing such a raw and insightful view on the experiences of which many refugees face in day to day life. While it has caused much debate amongst the viewers, this is exactly what we need...to be able to talk and debate our ideas about controversial issues especially in regard to human rights. I believe that this program would be particularly valuable in high schools where senior students can become educated about this issue while exploring and empathising with each humans right to belong and be safe.

Thankyou, thankyou, thankyou for finally standing up for human rights, and stepping away from and above political and uneducated/ignorant hype. This should be mandatory viewing for EVERY Australian - education is power.

I couldve easily been one of those 6. God forgive me and I thank SBS from the bottom of my heart for opening my eyes and my mind. Never again will I be so judgemental.

I'm hoping that the deleted scenes currently available on the website will be included in the DVD. They add a lot to our knowledge, particularly the interview with the UNHCR representative in Amman.

Thank you for giving us a program which tackled a controversial issue so honestly. I have quite a lot of experience with refugees and have heard many sad stories told by boat people, so I really welcome a documentary that shows us here in Australia that boat people are human. They flee their homes because of torture, and fear of death. Nobody wants to leave their home country and all that they love. They are forced to do so by circumstances beyond their control. Let us hope that Australians will open their minds and hearts more generously to the people who call on us to share our freedom with them.

Must see viewing for all Austalians that really don't know the truth behind some of the most misunderstood people in the world. Well done to the producers and SBS for making this documentary available. I found it impossible to miss once I began watching.
