Overview

In a love story that spans the ages, this four-part, epic drama intercuts between the experiences of Erin, an 18-year-old Londoner in present day Israel and Gaza, and those of her military grandfather who was part of the British peace-keeping force in Palestine at the end of WWII.

The story begins when Erin’s best friend, Eliza, the daughter of wealthy Israeli-Jewish parents, is called back to Israel for her National Service and invites Erin along to spend the summer with her family.

En route, Erin starts to read her grandfather’s diary. Moved by his account and the realization he wasn’t much older than her when he wrote the diary, Erin retraces his steps in modern day Israel, seeing for herself the hard facts of life for both Jewish and Palestinian communities.

The Promise is a gripping, political thriller that examines the origins of the Middle East conflict in events that took place under British rule sixty years ago.

Israeli co-operation on "The Promise" - Many writers seem to have missed this: the whole of the series "The Promise" was filmed in Israel itself, with the co-operation of mostly Israeli technicians. Have a look at the closing titles.

A proud Jew, a proud zionist, a decent honest human being

I recently watched the full four seasons of this dross. I have to say that this is some of the very worst propaganda since Nazi era Germany, seriously (ironically one of the most wretched characters, characterising Jews in stereotypically antisemitic ways, is played by a German woman... how ironic, a German producing anti-semitic propaganda). Much of the serial takes a few objective matter of facts, and then a lot of fictional nonsense, to mix truth and lies together, to vilify Jews. Having some knowledge of the issues in the middle east, I could hardly believe my eyes watching this rubbish. The scary thing is, it's so well produced, and it blends fact with fiction together so well, that an ordinary person simply wouldn't know better. It tries to come across as 'intellectual'. I could probably name dozens or more times in this serial where it simply veered into antisemitic propaganda (very subtly mind you), however I would like to make one case in point. At one point in this ridiculous serial, it shows Jewish children in Hevron throwing stones at arab children passing by, it also shows soldiers watching close by, but doing absolutely nothing. I have actually been to Hevron MANY times, and have a cousins that lives there. This NEVER happens, it is illegal, and religious Jewish children are imbued with the morals of our forefathers. I can tell anybody that would listen, that the simple facts are that if ANYBODY were to be throwing stones at ANY arab in Hevron, and a soldier was anywhere nearby, he would stop it immediately. He would stop it because first and foremost, by inciting the arabs, it would make his (the soldier's) job harder, and put his life at further risk. He would put a stop to it immediately because Jewish soldiers value peace and are there to protect EVERYONE, not just 'the settlers' as stated in this propaganda film. I could go on and on, but rather that waste any more of your time, I implore anybody who reads this review, or has watched this propaganda, to dig a little deeper at the REAL facts, and to make a complaint to SBS. Australia is not Germany, it has a proud history of religious tolerance, freedom to all, and a fair go to all decent human beings. Maintain that pride and stand up for what is right, by objecting to what is wrong!

"The Promise" beats the 1960 film "Exodus" on all counts. Otto Preminger film was very pro Israel and largely Zionist propaganda. 5 stars for "The Promise" and 1 star for Otto.

The Promise - A factual and gripping drama. I saw all 4 episodes of "The Promise" and I will be buying the DVD. I am please that the criticism from the Israel lobby and an ALP Senator for WA has been rejected too. Criticism of Israel is not anti-semitic or racist as SBS stated.<br>

This is what TV should be about. A great series that shows history as it really was - not necessarily written by 'the winners' and the plight of Palestinian people today. A lesson in how humans can be vicious and immoral in their treatment of others.

In "The Promise", Jews, Palestinian Arabs and the British all get their share of opprobrium, mostly warranted. But it is NOT a documentary, as most of its attackers seem to think. Kosminsky himself has made this point more than once. Also...the sheer unfamiliarity of the Palestinian argument has upset people who have problems trying to wear the shoes of others. Great, provocative television!

Have never before been so mentally challenged by such a brilliantly produced show. Leaving the issues aside, the presentation was both entertaining and socially confronting. the final episode left me quite distressed for some time. This series borders on the greats of television. Unfortunately, too few people watch SBS, so I've bought two copies to pass onto my friends as a classic.....well done Arte France and SBS.
