Episode 11: Abe and Nick
Abe's parents lost their home in Palestine during the 1948 war so they became refugees in Jordan where Abe was born in a refugee camp.
Nick left school in year 10 and got an apprenticeship with an electronics firm.
Episode 10: Hannah and Valerie
Hannah was born with Sacral Ageneisis, a rare genetic abnormality, with similar effects to Spina Bifida.
Valerie arrived by boat from Vietnam when she was one with her parents and three sisters.
Episode 9: Assefa and Heather
Assefa was born to a poor farming family in a remote region of Ethiopia to parents of an arranged marriage.
Heather was an adventurous
young backpacker when she met her husband Neil. Their first date was
spent hang-gliding, and three years later they scaled Mount Kilimanjaro
on their honeymoon.
Episode 8: Phoebe and Rachel
Phoebe left school after
year 10. She begun hanging out with a bad crowd and met a serious partner when she was 17. Before long Phoebe was on the receiving end of
domestic violence.
Rachel was born to a middle class family and had a very privileged upbringing in terms of schooling and music.
Episode 7: Jon & Terri and Michael
Jon & Terri are a match made in heaven, they’re both avid collectors.
Michael was born in 1961,
the youngest of six children. At 18 months old he and his siblings were
taken from their mother. He is one of the Stolen Generation.
Episode 6: Lynette and Ria
Lynette and her husband have lived in their neighbourhood for 39 years.
Ria was two when she was diagnosed with glaucoma after banging her head
against walls to alleviate headaches. Her sight deteriorated and she lost it completely by the time she was
five.
Episode 5: Sonia and Chris
Sonia was born in 1932 in Germany. After her parents divorced, Sonia lived with her father. During the war, Sonia’s father became a POW so she was raised by her grandparents.
Chris has grown up in a very religious family and went to a Christian school
from kindergarten. From about 12 years old, he knew that he was gay, but
felt forced to hide his sexuality as it was always stressed upon him
that homosexuality was wrong in the eyes of God and the Church.
Episode 4: Maria and Rob
Maria was raised by her white, single Italian mum and has one sister. When she was eight, Maria asked her mum why she had black skin and found out that her dad was Aboriginal.
Rob suffered from Social Anxiety Disorder, which has had a very crippling effect on his social life and relationships.
Episode 3: Eva and Kerry
Eva grew up during the Cultural Revolution in China. Life was tough and she still has strong memories of the strict regimes her family faced.
Kerry was born in WA and being fourth generation military, third generation Navy, she joined up to the armed forces when she was 17.
Episode 2: John and Waghma
John was one of four boys and lost his mother to breast cancer when he was five years old.
Waghma was a law student in Afghanistan when her father was approached by her aunty and uncle with an offer of an arranged marriage between their brother and Waghma.
Episode 1: Benedicta and Jo
Born in France to Ghanian diplomat parents, Benedicta lived in many countries before settling in Australia with her father after her parents’ divorce.
Jo comes from a very big Italian family. He sees 15 of his cousins every day and sees his grandparents at least twice a week for their amazing cooking.
