Living Black Season 20 Episode 2

This week, we report from Perth, Western Australia, where the Noongar people are close to sealing a native title deal with the State Government worth close to $1.3bn. But this historic move which could settle native title claims over Perth and the south west has caused division within the community.

WA Premier Colin Barnett talks exclusively to video Journalist Laura Murphy-Oates about the tabled bill and the impending settlement.

Professor Jon Altman from the Centre for Aboriginal Economic Policy Research at the Australian National University (ANU) in Canberra talks to host Karla Grant about the implications of the Western Australian Noongar Native Title settlement and how it compares with settlements made with other First Peoples.

Shark Culling
One of Australia's most famed beaches, Cottesloe Beach, was the scene of recent protests where thousands of people gathered in opposition to the Western Australian Government’s shark cull program.

Whilst shark nets are used in NSW and drum lines in Queensland, the introduction of lines in WA has been highly contentious, provoking public outcry both here and abroad. Laura Murphy-Oates speaks with marine scientists, activists and the Wardandi people who all have a view on the culling program.

Malya Yuturringu Film Festival
Curtis Taylor is a Martu filmmaker, who began making movies to document life on his remote Western desert hometown of Punmu. He is now using his talents to enrich the lives of Martu children, teaching them creativity and a modern form of telling Martu stories. Video Journalist Hannah Hollis spoke to the filmmaker about his plans to put on a special, first of its kind film festival in the middle of the desert.
