The Aboriginal Program aims to connect, inform and inspire Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities around the nations through news, current affairs, community information and profiles, and some deadly music!

Regular Features

The Aboriginal Program has a national focus on events and issues that affect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

Part of that focus is to be a national platform where communities can learn something about each other - through profiles on individuals, community programs and events.

Issues

We aim to keep you up to date with Stolen Generations, Native Title, Land Rights, Deaths in Custody, the Northern Territory Intervention, funding news and much more!

Correspondents

We also regularly use the expertise and knowledge of correspondents Stefan Armbruster, Karen Ashford and Ken Boase for overviews of what is happening in different parts of the country.

Deadly music

Music is vital, and we only play music from Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people. Our Friday night programs focus on just some of the deadly music from around the nations.

Our national program on Wednesday is also broadcast on the National Indigenous Radio Service, which in turn is then broadcast on many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander local radio stations.

Michelle Lovegrove

Michelle Lovegrove is the Executive Producer of the Aboriginal Program.

Michelle is a proud Ngarrindjeri woman born in Port Augusta in South Australia. Her mother, grandparents and ancestors come from Ngarrindjeri country along the beautiful Coorong River. She is mother to her Ngarrindjeri angel Jarrah, a daughter, sister and an aunt to many.

Michelle has had more than two decades’ experience in the media.
She graduated from Mitchell CAE in Bathurst with a degree in print journalism, and later also studied at the University of New South Wales for TESOL qualifications (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages).

Michelle has worked in country, regional, and metropolitan radio stations as a news journalist, and Channels 7 and 10 in Sydney. She has won five awards for Best News Presenter in the commercial radio industry, and has produced many radio documentaries on Aboriginal, environmental and social justice issues

Michelle believes that the Aboriginal Program has a unique voice in the Australian media. She says that although Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are among the most reported-about people on the planet, the voices of recognised community leaders and members are often unheard in mainstream media.

Michelle’s aims are to help connect the voices of communities on a national platform, inform, entertain and hopefully inspire, through stories of courage, success and resilience.

Dan Conifer

Dan Conifer descends from the Ngemba people of Brewarrina, in North-West New South Wales.

Dan began his broadcasting career in 2005, at 14 years of age, volunteering at Sydney’s Koori Radio. Two years later, he began hosting the Koori Radio Sport show.

In 2007 and 2008, Dan commentated the NSW Aboriginal Rugby League Knockout carnival, and the First Contact touch football tournament for National Indigenous Television.

Dan has hosted the National Indigenous Radio Service coverage of the Deadly’s and Sydney’s Yabun festival.

He was also awarded the 2009 Koori Radio Volunteer Broadcaster of the Year.

In 2009, Dan began working at SBS Radio with Alchemy, contributing to the Game On sports show, and Multicult.

Dan joined SBS Radio’s A-League football coverage last season, and reported on the Deadly Awards for SBS Radio’s Aboriginal Programme.

In 2010 Dan started as a newsreader for SBS Radio’s Aboriginal Programme.

Dan was a part of SBS Radio’s 2010 FIFA World Cup coverage, hosting all of Australia’s group matches.

Dan is completing a combined Journalism/Laws degree at the University of Technology, Sydney.

In May 2010, he was awarded ‘Best first year portfolio’ at the UTS Journalism Awards.

Garfield Samuels

Garfield is a passionate community supporter with a keen interest in sports, politics, economics, social and cultural practices and how they affect the lives of people, especially Aboriginal people.

Born in Jamaica, Garfield Samuels is a broadcaster with a wealth of experience in news, current affairs and sports. He has covered a number of news assignments including national elections in Jamaica and other parts of the Caribbean as well as international sports events including the Olympic Games, the IAAF World Athletics Championships and World Netball Championships, Test and One day Cricket Internationals and International Soccer and the Australian “A” League Soccer.

Garfield has worked with SBS radio since 2008 in different capacities including as a contributor to The Aboriginal Program, World View and Sports as a host of the Hyundai A-League Football program. He is a trained broadcaster and a graduate of the G C Foster College of Physical Education and Sports with a major in sports training.

A globe trotter, Garfield has worked for TV and radio stations in the Caribbean including Radio Jamaica Ltd, ZIZ Broadcasting Corporation in St. Kitts Nevis, Caribbean Media Corporation, ZRod FM in The British Virgin Islands and the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) TV department.

At leisure, Garfield enjoys reggae music, dancing, traveling, and cooking among a host of activities.
