Elders in northern Australia say a loss of cultural identity is one of the main reasons for rising Aboriginal youth suicides.

Aboriginal suicide rates in the Northern Territory now make up half of all suicides in the NT and 80 per cent of those are young people aged between 10 and 24.

A new report - The Elders Report - has been released, where 15 elders from across the country speak candidly about the increasing loss of young lives in their communities from self harm and suicides.

Lorna Hudson from Derby in the Kimberley says young males in particular need access to 24-hour mental health support.
