Arabic is the second most commonly spoken language other than English in Sydney and remains in the top five languages other than English, spoken in Australia as a whole. Listeners come from more than 22 countries and more than 9 ethnicities. Newly-arrived migrants come from Sudan, Somalia, and Iraq. Most of the Arabic speaking community members are of Lebanese background, their migration experience dates back to the 1800s.
SBS Radio's Arabic Language program broadcasters have won several international and national awards for broadcast journalism and creative excellence.
In 2002, the program received the first Walkley ever to be awarded in Australia to a journalistic work in a language other than English. The Walkley was awarded in the Radio Feature, Documentary or Broadcast Special category.
The first prestigious Award: In 1988, the Australasian Academy of Broadcast Arts and Sciences recognised the program with a Pater award for the Best Special Talk documentary. The program received also an award for Best Fund Raising program.
Youth media awards: the 1997 New South Wales Premier's Youth Media Award and the 1994 Philips Electronics Award. It has also received several awards from Community organisations and FECCA for pioneering and distinguished programming.
