Parramasala 2011

SBS Radio attended the South Asian arts festival Parramasala, held in Parramatta in Sydney’s west. The festival calendar featured music, dance, theatre, film, visual arts and markets from international and Australian artists. Nital Desai from SBS Gujarati Radio and Rajish Aryal from SBS Nepalese Radio represented SBS on the ground at the event.

Navratri 2011

SBS Radio Sydney attended the Navratri celebrations for the Gujarati community . Navaratri or Navaratra is a Hindu festival of worship and dance. The word Navaratri literally means nine nights in Sanskrit Nav = nine and Ratri = nights. It is celebrated during the period of Sarad Masi Aswin by Hindu lunar calendar, all eight days and nine nights have its importance and is divided into sets of three days to adore three different aspects of the supreme goddess or goddesses.

Republic day celebrations in Sydney

Republic day of India was celebrated in Sydney, on 26th of January. A flag hoisting ceremony was held at the Consul General's residence at 0900 hours. The flag hoisting was followed by singing of the national anthem, reading of the President’s speech, followed by refreshments. About 150-200 people attended the function. There were community members, consular staff, members of Indian Media and some Australian Guests.

This year Holi was celebrated over three days from Friday 12 March to Sunday 14 March 2010 at Palm Grove and Cockle Bay, Darling Harbour in Sydney. People from many different cultures and countries joined in throwing colours on each other , enjoying Indian vegetarian food , musical performances and the cultural extravaganza.
