The Khmer Community in Australia
Khmer or Cambodian is the native language of over 15 million people living in Cambodia, South Vietnam, Thailand and Laos.
It is one of the Mon-Khmer family languages, which extends from India to the South China Sea.
Despite one hundred years under French rule, Khmer people have retained their original language and culture.
SBS broadcasters see their role as supporting and stimulating community activities that keep the Khmer language and culture alive, for all Australians.
Arrival and Settlement
A Khmer community has been present in Australia for a comparatively short period of time. According to a research conducted during 1998 on behalf of the New South Wales Khmer community there is no record of any migration until the early 1960s when six Khmer youths arrived in Australia to study under the auspices of the Commonwealth Colombo Plan.
In 1970, some thirty students arrived under the same study program.
When Pol Pot's brutal Khmer Rouge regime seized power in the mid-1970s most of these students decided to remain in Australia and became the first significant group of Khmer settlers here.
The Cambodian refugee influx into Australia began in the late 1970s.
People who arrived as refugees represent the largest proportion of the Khmer population in Australia.
Since the closure of the refugee camps on Cambodia's borders in the early 1990s, migration from the country has been dominated by people who've arrived under the Family Reunion Migration Program and other humanitarian schemes.
Statistics from the Bureau of Immigration and Population Research notes that in 1976 the Cambodian-born population in Australia numbered 496.
In 1996 that number had increased to more than 21,000.
