Fauja's visit to Australia 2013

The world’s oldest marathoner Fauja Singh came to Australia for the first time ever on March 22, 2013. Apart from sight-seeing, officiating functions and participating at multiple events, he celebrated his 102nd birthday among fans and admirers in Melbourne. Sydney Sikhs turned out in huge numbers and in all their splendour on April 21, 2012, to celebrate Vaisakhi. The Nagar Kirtan (ceremonial street parade) started from the Opera House, finishing up at the city centre (Martin Pl), drawing a massive crowd of nearly 10,000 people. Even at the age of 100, Fauja Singh is unstoppable. He began running marathons at the age of 88, has many world records to his name and dreams of running a marathon next year, to make the ultimate record. Simple, energetic, charming, witty and tenacious Fauja was the face of the Adidas campaign Impossible is Nothing; his official biography "The Turbaned Tornado" by Khushwant Singh will be released at the House of Lords, London, on July 11, 2011

The 24th National Sikh Games 2011 were held over the Easter weekend in South Australia. The Guru Nanak Adelaide Games were well attended by spectators and teams from all around Australia and overseas (New Zealand, Malaysia and India). The 25th National Sikh Games will be held over the Easter weekend in 2012 in Sydney.

From Matt Preston to the Indian High commissioner, from the Lord Mayor to the ordinary Aussie Bollywood dance enthusiast, they all turned out in great numbers to mingle with the stars Vidya Balan, Arbaz Khan, Malaika Arora Khan, Ali Zafar and others, during the Indian film festival in Melbourne Bollywood and Beyond. And more than 1200 Melburnians swayed to "Munni badnaam hui" alongside the original Munni (Malaika), dancing their way into the Guinness Book of Records for the World's biggest Bollywood class, held on the banks of the Yarra river in Melbourne.

The India Australia Friendship Fair 2010, held on August 15 at the Athletic Centre, Sydney Olympic Park, was a jubilant celebration of India's Independence Day. The event attracted around 20 000 people this year, most of them Indian Australian families out to enjoy a day rich with entertainment, including Bollywood stars, Indian, Australian and Brazilian dancers, sporting personalities, and Federal and State politicians.

On Sunday, July 25th, 2010 a ceremony was held at the Warrnambool cemetery at 2pm and the ashes of Indian Hawker, Pooran Singh, were handed over to legendary Indian cricketer Kapil Dev, together with Harmel Uppal, the grand nephew of Pooran Singh.

The story of Pooran Singh's ashes

Pooran Singh came from Punjab to Australia in 1899, and worked in country Victoria as a hawker for 47 years. After his death in Warrnambool in 1947, he was cremated, and his ashes have been preserved at the cemetery for 63 years now. Pooran Singh wanted his ashes to be spread on the River Ganges in India, and we are trying to fulfil his last wish.
