They do a variety of jobs - taking care of children, the elderly, the disabled, the homeless, and other vulnerable Australians.

 

But those working in the community sector have long been paid much less than those in many other industries.

 

That all changed this week with the announcement of a wage increase for those working in the sector.

About 150,000 community sector workers across the country, mostly women, have been awarded a pay rise by Fair Work Australia in a landmark test case.

 

The pay increases will range from 19 to 41 per cent, or wage rises of between six-thousand and 24-thousand dollars.
