NITV 2017 Spirit Initiative Runner Up: Bessy-May Taylor from Goolarri Media

NITV announced its further commitment to the Indigenous production sector at the Remote Indigenous Media Festival, revealing the winner of the inaugural Spirit Initiative and calling for submissions for a sixth season of the short-documentary initiative, Our Stories.

Announced in Western Australia’s Irrunytju (Wingellina) community, the Spirit Initiative includes a work placement with NITV and an Our Stories commission. It recognised the works of Chris Fitzpatrick from the Central Australian Aboriginal Media Association (CAAMA) and Bessy-May Taylor from Goolarri Media.

Speaking about the win, Chris said: “I’m super excited to have been chosen for NITV’s Spirit Initiative and can’t wait to bring my film to life and gain experience working with the NITV team.”

The short-documentary initiative, Our Stories, was also announced for a sixth season at the festival. The initiative aims to share the history, culture and language of Indigenous Australia through stories of elders, youth and communities.  In 2018, NITV will welcome more than 40 stories which will explore the themes of celebration, love, respect and inspiration.

NITV Channel Manager, Tanya Orman said: “As storytelling is the core of our channel, we’re excited to commission another collection of Our Stories in 2018, as well as offer this wonderful opportunity to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander content creators and film-makers across Australia.

“We can’t wait to see what beautiful stories will emerge from these submissions.”

The 2017 Festival was hosted by the Indigenous Remote Communications Association (IRCA), in partnership with the Irrunytju community.

The deadline for Our Stories submissions is Monday 30 October, 2017 with winners being announced on Friday 17 November.
