Is Sugar the New Fat?

Sugar! What’s not to like?

What if you were told that sugar is the big contributor to the worldwide explosion in obesity, diabetes, and something called ‘metabolic syndrome’? What if you discovered sugar is addictive and that the sweet stuff is added to way more food products than you ever imagined?

As a globalised world, we are facing a tsunami of type 2 diabetes cases and heart disease.  In New Zealand a few decades ago 1 in 14 adults were obese; now the figure is 1 in 3. Why the sudden increase?

We used to think a high fat diet was to blame... So who’s the real bad guy?

Psychologist and author, Nigel Latta embarks on a journey to discover if sugar could be the real culprit in this crisis. After an initial blood test his initial confidence in what he’d previously considered a healthy lifestyle is snatched away, and what was first a stunt for TV suddenly becomes a very personal journey trying to find out what we really should be eating.

Latta takes on world leading international scientists and the food industry, carries bloody heavy stuff up a hill, and radically changes his diet in an attempt to both understand the truth about sugar, and try not to die sooner than he has to.

Is Sugar the New Fat? airs 7.35pm, Monday 31 August on SBS.
