The 26 year old blitzed the 29.5km course in a time of 38min 48sec to win the world title.

Hanna Solovey of the Ukraine finished second, 18 seconds behind Brennauer, with Evelyn Stevens (USA) a further three seconds behind.

Australia's Katrin Garfoot finished 11th, 1min 23sec behind the winner.

Defending champion Ellen van Dijk (Netherland) and race favourite Linda Villumsen (New Zealand) failed to make an impact, finishing seventh and ninth respectively.

"I can't believe it right now, I am overwhelmed," said Brennauer who was part of the Specialized-lululemon squad that won the team time trial on Sunday.

"I had a really good day, and I knew that for me it was good that the race was so long because I'm very good at the end of the race. I gave it all on the climb and took no risks on the downhill, and at the end went full gas to the finish."

American Alison Powers was the first to give any indication of how fast the winner would need to be, posting a time of 40min 2sec early in the proceedings.

Twenty-one year old German Mieke Kroeger then brought the benchmark below the 40 minute mark with a time of 39min 26sec.

However it was Solovey who looked to be the strongest on the road, flying through the early checkpoints. Despite this, the race was still open with only five seconds separating the top riders at the 12km mark.

As Solovey continued to draw out her advantage over the rest of the field, it was only Brennauer who was her equal, trailing her by 3.65sec at the 21km check point.

Solovey came home in a time of 39min 6sec to take the hot seat with an anxious wait for the German to finish.

Brennauer put in a huge effort to claw back 22 seconds over the final eight kilometres to earn herself the rainbow rings.

It was a successful day for Germany with Lennard Kamna winning the junior men's time trial earlier in the day.
