Ulissi wins the Giro's longest day, Gerrans third
Diego Ulissi was the strongest rider on Stage 7 of the Giro d'Italia after the peloton spent well over seven draining hours in the saddle.

The Italian Grand Tour is Gerrans' first target of the year as he was sidelined from racing for most of the season due to injury.

The Australian showed his he is on the comeback when he pulled on the first Maglia Rosa of the race after Orica-GreenEDGE won the opening team time trial.

Gerrans notched his first individual result with a third placing on Stage 7,  the longest of the tour at 264km, crossing the line behind winner Diego Ulissi (Lampre-Merida) and Juan Jose Lobato (Movistar).

It was every man for himself in the final sprint in Fiuggi with the peloton clocking nearly seven and a half hours in the saddle. Gerrans's Classics pedigree showed with the Australian competitive in the finish despite limited support from his Orica-GreenEDGE team-mates.

“It was like a Classic today, a Classic after seven days of racing. So what that meant is that we had a mentality of a one-day race and every single rider did exactly what was asked of them and delivered right to the end,” said sport director Matt White.

“The other pleasing thing is that Simon is on his way back. He has had a horrible year with injuries and he has worked very hard to get where he is and that was his first opportunity to get a result for himself. Third place in a Grand Tour is a very good sign for the rest of the Giro and obviously for summer.”
