The world governing body said it will allow disc brakes to be used across all professional road categories, WorldTour to Continental, in 2016 as it assesses a full adoption of the technology in 2017.

Earlier this year the UCI allowed WorldTour teams to use discs in two events of their choice and decided after consultation with numerous stakeholders, including riders, mechanics, organisers, neutral service providers, teams and the bicycle industry, to extend that more fully.

"The use of disc brakes will be carefully monitored throughout the year with a view to definitively allowing them to be used in professional road cycling from 2017," the UCI said in a press release.
