The 24-tear-old Kazakh fell into a ravine after losing control on a high speed descent during the 134km stage held in and around Nice.

He was winched to safety and evacuated to a hospital but was conscious throughout.

According to his Astana team Fominykh suffered two fractured lumbar vertebrae: the L1 and L3 and will need at least one month of recovery while wearing a neck brace.
