Nick Miller (Team McDonalds Downunder) was the overall winner of the A-grade 2018 Tour of the Tropics, with Team McDonalds enjoying near complete domination of the Cairns event.

Miller got the team started with victory in the opening criterium, then Cameron Layton kept the Team McDonald’s Downunder flag flying with a Stage 2 win in the Malanda hills. In the final sprint to the line Cameron Layton ran out a convincing winner, with team mates Mat Bickel and Tom Coates completing the trifecta.

The Gold Coast squad's superb form continued on stage 4, when Miller backed up his strong criterium win on Friday with another winning performance through the rolling hills of Yungaburra and Peeramon in Sunday’s road race.

Cameron Layton drew alongside Miller into the uphill finish with Layton finishing brilliantly to win comfortably from Miller. Third place going to Tom Coates from Bickel fourth, they were followed home by Brendon Brauer and James Page, both local riders putting tremendous performances considering the strength of the McDonalds quartet.

The northern Queensland event is angling for a spot on the National Road Series calendar for 2019 and showed that they could run a complicated five-stage event for over 160 cyclists from around Australia.
