Valverde, Quintana, Porte, Froome headline deep Catalunya field
Watch last year's winner Alejandro Valverde and team mate Nairo Quintana do battle with Richie Porte and Chris Froome at the 99th Volta Ciclista a Catalunya on SBS VICELAND, live from super early in the morning, Tuesday 26 March.

Impey deserved the rest after becoming the first rider to take back to back men's Tour Down Under titles in January and in February, he was crowned South African national champion in both the road race and ITT.

The South African took it easy during Saturday's 291km Milan-San Remo, finishing 119th.

“I am looking forward to getting back into the swing of things after a busy start to the year,"  he said. "It has been nice to have a break but I feel ready to race. We have a very strong squad.

“I will definitely try go for one or two stages if the opportunity is there but I am mindful of the fact that we will of course be looking for a good overall. I have enjoyed success here in the past and racing on home roads gives me some extra motivation.”

But it's all about the GC with both Yates brothers in strong form; Adam missing out on overall victory at Tirreno-Adriatico by one second to Primoz Roglic, while Simon won the ITT at Paris-Nice and took a classy victory on the mountainous fourth stage of the Ruta del Sol.

Lining up with team mates Impey, Esteban Chaves, Tsgabu Grmay, Dion Smith and Michael Albasini, the Yates’ could give the GC a good shake.

"We are sending a super strong team to Catalunya and there’s no TT which is convenient!" Adam Yates said. "We didn’t come away with the overall win in Tirreno recently, but we took a stage win and held the leader’s jersey for almost the whole race, so it bodes well for the team and the team’s confidence in me before Catalunya.

“It looks like a super hard race and we have some good climbers. The stage to Vallter 2000, this climb isn’t too far from Andorra, so a lot of guys know this climb and know how hard it is, I have done it in the past in 2014 I think, the first year I did Catalunya so it is a super hard climb and a stage that can be crucial.

“Simon has shown he is going well in Paris-Nice, obviously winning the TT there, and we have a good strong team so we will have strength in numbers and hopefully we can do something.”

Meanwhile Team Sunweb is taking Michael Matthews, who, despite abandoning Paris-Nice after a nasty head knock, animated Milan-San Remo finishing 12th.

Also flying the Aussie flag for Sunweb are youngsters Chris Hamilton, Rob Power and Michael Storer.

Watch the super deep field do battle at this year's Volta Ciclista a Catalunya on SBS Viceland and via the SBS On Demand app from early morning Tuesday, 26 March 2019.
