Matthews took an impressive second win of the race, leading out the sprint and having just enough left in the tank to withstand a late surge from Bauhaus as the race came to a finish in Vila-Sec.

Matthews finished second on the previous day's stage and was visibily annoyed at the finish after winning the bunch sprint, but being denied the victory by lone leader Maximilian Schachmann (BORA-hansgrohe).

He made amends by winning his second stage of the Volta a Catalunya, after having won a similar sprint stage on the second day of competition.

“I was really tired after the difficult few stages we’ve had so I wasn’t sure if I would be up for the sprint today," said Matthews. "However, around halfway through the stage I felt much better and the team started to work at the front.

"The sprint was very technical but the guys positioned me at the head of the bunch coming under the flamme rouge. I followed the right wheels and just had enough to hold on for the win. The team were very motivated to get a result for Wilco today after his crash in yesterday’s stage and I’m really happy we pulled it off.”

Matthews himself is in the process of recovering his form after a nasty crash at Paris-Nice saw him fracture his eye socket and sustain other facial injuries.

Miguel Angel Lopez (Astana) maintained the race lead by finishing in the main bunch. Just the final day around Barcelona remains for the riders, with the 143.1 kilometre stage including a tough, hilly circuit around the city.
