The course was not one which suited his high mountain climbing talents so it's no surprise to see Egan Bernal step away from a position on the Colombia world championship squad.

Tour de France champion Bernal (Team Ineos) was included in the Colombia lineup designed by team selector Carlos Mario Jaramillo but declined his position before deadline. No reason was given for his decision.

Movistar's Carlos Betancur will step up after last competing for Colombia at the world championships five years ago. His most recent outing was the Grand Prix Cycliste de Montréal where he finished 15th overall, just five seconds behind race winner Greg Van Avermaet (CCC).

The men's elite road race is set for 29 September in Yorkshire, United Kingdom on a punchy 285km course best suited to riders who can survive repeated short hard climbs and still finish with acceleration.

Colombia will still field a team of well-known stars, including Nairo Quintana (Movistar) and Mitchelton-Scott's Esteban Chaves but perhaps its best chance for a first world road championship is in the legs of Alvaro Hodeg (Deceuninck-Quick Step).

Also selected is sprinter Fernando Gaviria (UAE Team Emirates), Daniel Martinez (EF Education First), Sebastian Henao (Ineos) and Sebastian Molano (UAE-Team Emirates).

Colombia will be represented in the elite women's road race by Liliana Moreno (Astana), Paula Patino (Movistar) and Diana Penuela (Alé Cipollini).
