The 22-year-old track specialist produced a relentless ride around an undulating 30.3km course and blasted over the finish line in Harrogate in 42 minutes 11.57 seconds.

Favourite and defending world TT champion Annemiek van Vleuten was more than a minute off Dygert-Owen's pace by the time she reached the halfway split, as was fellow Dutchwoman Anna van der Breggen, and neither could respond.

World and Olympic road race champion Van der Breggen took her fourth silver medal in the event, a massive one minute 32 seconds slower than Dygert-Owen, while Van Vleuten had to settle for bronze, another other 20 seconds off the pace.

It was the biggest winning margin for a woman or man since the time trial was added to the world championships in 1994.

“I prepared really well for this and really worked towards this race,” Dygert-Owen said. “I came to win and I’m really happy with the result.”

In a rare foray into a world championship time trial Australian Amanda Spratt finished 11th overall, three minutes and 57 seconds behind Dygert-Owen.

The under 23 men's time trial was claimed by now three-time winner Mikkel Bjerg of Denmark ahead of Americans Ian Garrison and Brandon McNulty.

The dangerous weather conditions during the under 23 race claimed Denmark's European champion Johan Price-Pejtersen who saw his hopes of victory ended when he rode into a trench of water which sent him flying. Hungary's Attila Valter was also a casualty with a spectacular slide in deep water.

"I think it was a bit extreme," Bjerg said. "In my opinion, I think they should have cancelled it for a bit, until at least the pools (of water) had gone and the rain had stopped being so extreme."
