In-form Kazakh rider Alexey Lutsenko did not travel to Italy to start the men's road race at the UCI Road World Championships after testing positive for the coronavirus.

At the very least an outside contender for the men's road race LIVE NOW on SBS On Demand, Lutsenko tested positive before leaving his home in Monaco for Imola on September 25, the Kazakhstan Cycling Federation said in a post on its Instagram account. 

"The leader of the Kazakhstan national team, Aleksey Lutsenko, will not be able to represent the country at the World Championships on September 27 due to a positive test for the Covid-19 coronavirus," the statement said. 

"Lutsenko's test showed a positive result on September 25. At the moment, the results of retesting are expected, on which the further program of the athlete will depend."

The winner of Stage 6 at the 2020 Tour de France will also miss La Flèche Wallonne on September 30 as he must self-isolate at home for seven days.
