French hopes that a home rider would take a Bastille Day victory were soundly dashed by Chris Froome yesterday. However, we were treated to the inevitable sight of a solo French breakaway by Pierrick Fédrigo (Bretagne-Séché) in the early part of the stage. He was later joined by Kenneth van Bilsen (Cofidis).

The Best Frenchman prize at the top of the mountain went to Pierre Rolland (Europcar), who finished eighth on the stage, followed by Tony Gallopin (Lotto-Soudal) in ninth, who presumably made his mum very happy.
