Richie Porte wasn't the only Aussie to retire from the race on Stage 9: Mark Renshaw (Dimension Data) didn't make the time cut and was eliminated from the race.

This year's race is turning into a Tour to forget for the South African team, with chief sprinter Mark Cavendish already having retired from injuries sustained in a crash with Peter Sagan on Stage 4. Stage victory hopes will now be pinned on opportunists Edvald Boassen Hagen and Steve Cummings.

Today's retirements now leaves six Aussies in the Tour: Simon Clarke (Cannondale-Drapac), Jay McCarthy (Bora-Hansgrohe), Michael Matthews (Sunweb), Mathew Hayman (Orica-Scott), Damien Howson (Orica-Scott) and Adam Hansen (Lotto-Soudal). All six finished safely in the bunch.
