Ivan Basso (Tinkoff-Saxo) has announced he is retiring from professional racing.

He made the announcement during the 2016 Giro d'Italia course presentation.

"Every athlete knows that his light will not shine bright throughout his career. Inevitably, at some stage it will start dimming and it's the sign of a wise athlete to know when the moment has come to turn it off", said Basso.

While being a member of the squad that supported Alberto Contador in his historic Giro-Tour attempt this year, Basso was diagnosed with testicular cancer, following a crash suffered on the fifth stage of the Tour de France. He was successfully operated on July 15th, he was back on his bike on August 17 and was declared cancer free on September 24.

Basso will continue to work with Tinkoff-Saxo in an as-yet unspecified role that will encompass 'technical and mangerial aspects'.

Alejandro Valverde's fourth place at Il Lombardia has clinched the 2015 teams competition for Movistar.

Valverde - himself the individual winner of the WorldTour for 2015 - sprinted against Astana's Diego Rosa at the end of the Race of the Falling Leaves to clinch the teams competition.

"It was a long, intense season, and we had to give everything today just as we did during the whole season," said Eusebio Unzué

"To sum things up: 'mission accomplished'. It's a huge reward for everything we did on a sporting point of view this year: always at the front, taking responsibilities in many races, attacking."

Freshly-minted World Road Race Champion Peter Sagan has unveiled his rainbow stripes kit and custom bike ahead of its racing debut at the Tour of Abu Dhabi.

While there may be few surprises as to the jersey design, Sagan's choice of knicks may be more controversial: the new World Champ has plumped for white knicks to match his kit.

Tinkoff-Saxo bike sponsor Specialized has also provided Sagan with a custom-painted frame to commemorate Sagan's victory. The bike is predominantly black with rainbow highlights.

Should the rainbow jersey be worn with white or black shorts?
