The MARS 2017 Cycling Australia Road National Championships will hit the roads in and around Ballarat in January and will anchor another Australian summer of cycling which includes the Santos Tour Down Under, Cadel Evans Road Race and Herald Sun Tour.

The event has been held in the same place for several years but Cycling Australia will hopefully be open to offers from other regions when the current contract ends on 8 January, 2017.

There is no doubt Ballarat and Buninyong have delivered a consistently great race but a refresh is needed to add course variety and promote the sport outside of Victoria.

It's also important to cultivate a different kind of national champion, with the current course usually suiting the talents of a punchy strongman like current national men's road champion Jack Bobridge over a pure climber like Jack Haig or sprinter like Caleb Ewan.

Still no news on who will broadcast the men's and women's road races but everyone is working on making it happen. SBS cycling will be there to bring you the news regardless.
