Sticky rice steamer

Conical bamboo steamer baskets and pots (houat khao) are traditionally given as wedding presents in preparation for a lifetime of cooking sticky rice! Available from Asian food stores, they are inexpensive and indispensible.

Mortar and pestle

A khok and saak made of deep clay is a fixture in every Lao kitchen and vital for the preparation of sauces, pastes and salads. The long, heavy Lao pestle is used to deliver repeated crushing blows to the ingredients in the deep, vase-shaped mortar; at the same time a flattened spoon is used to lift and circulate flavours.
