Cyrus Villanueva may have been crowned the latest champ of The X Factor last night, but just as many viewers were no doubt watching the finale for a performance by a pair of singers with decades of experience behind them. For the first time in almost 30 years, superstar siblings Kylie and Dannii Minogue sang together on TV, performing the festive track “100 Degrees”, which is tucked away on the deluxe edition of the recently released Kylie Christmas.
Like their last TV duet, in a 1986 episode of Young Talent Time, the sisters wore matching dresses – inspired by the frocks sported by Tina Turner and Cher in this classic performance and busted out the types of moves young girls have practised in front of their bedroom mirrors since, well, bedroom mirrors were invented.
But it’s not the first time the Minogues have sung together since 1986. Nor is it the first time they’ve appeared on TV together since that iconic YTT moment. It is, however, their best collaboration since then. Let’s countdown the top 7 Minogue Moments…
7. The Kylie Show
The release of Kylie’s X album in 2007 – which coincided with her 20th anniversary as a recording artist – was such a momentous occasion that it warranted a one-off TV special, The Kylie Show. A mix of studio performances and silly skits, it featured a sketch that played up Kylie and Dannii’s supposed rivalry. Wearing identical dresses and getting increasingly bitchy towards each other, the over-the-top cat-fight ended with Kylie punching Simon Cowell, who mistakes her for “Dannii’s mum”. Oh, the LOLs.
6. "Love Traffic"
Back in 1990, Dannii launched her assault on the pop charts, releasing her debut single, “Love and Kisses”, and self-titled album. While Kylie’s music came courtesy of British producers Stock Aitken Waterman, Dannii opted for an American New Jack Swing-influenced sound, as evidenced by album track “Love Traffic”. Why is this little-known song on this list? Well, it was co-written by none other than Kylie, with one of Dannii’s producers, Alvin Moody.
5. "The Winner Takes It All"
Dannii may have performed one of Kylie’s songs and Kylie may have recorded backing vocals for another Dannii album track, “So in Love with Yourself” from 1997’s Girl - but it would take until 2008 for the Minogues to sing lead on a track together. This cover version of the ABBA classic was recorded with the BBC Orchestra for the soundtrack to comedy series Beautiful People (which featured a character called Kylie who was obsessed with the elder Minogue). The song would later appear on one of Dannii’s many career retrospectives, This Is It: The Very Best of Dannii Minogue.
4. The X Factor judges' houses 2013
“You get two Minogues for the price of one,” Kylie said after she was introduced by sister Dannii during the home visits* stage of The X Factor in 2013. Of course, this was in the days before Kylie became a judge on rival reality competition The Voice when such cross-network sibling assistance would be impossible. Unlike their appearance on The Kylie Show, this collaboration didn’t feel at all staged – with the sisters’ easy rapport helping them sort through the contestants, which included future winner Dami Im.
*Oddly, the “home” visit was held in what looked like a warehouse space in New York.
With Robbie Williams unavailable, who better to assist Kylie in singing “Kids” in her hometown of Melbourne during her Showgirl: The Homecoming Tour than little sis Dannii? Having previously welcomed U2’s Bono to the stage during one of her Sydney shows for the number, Kylie went one better at the December 11, 2006 show – and the crowd went wild when Dannii stepped out on to the stage. Unfortunately, not in a matching animal-print jumpsuit.
2. "100 Degrees"
The hype in the days leading up to it was through the roof, but thankfully the TV return of the Sisters Minogue didn’t disappoint. Camp as you like, the disco duet had everything we’ve come to expect from Kylie and Dannii – slinky frocks, formation dancing, confetti… and it looked like the sisters were able to genuinely enjoy their moment together.
1. "Sisters Are Doin' It for Themselves"
C’mon, it’s going to be pretty hard for Kylie and Dannii to ever top this piece of TV history. Both Kylie and Dannii were on hugely successful Channel 10 shows – but no one knew that Young Talent Time star Danielle’s actress sister could sing too. Performing the Eurythmics and Aretha Franklin hit from the year before was a no brainer, but thanks to some sparkly silver dresses, big, big hair, cheesy choreography and the obligatory YTT show-stopping ending, the Minogues’ musical debut was a truly thrilling moment.
