• These people are not nice. (HBO)Source: HBO
You might THINK you get hooked on a show because of the protagonist, but really it’s those malevolent villains who suck you in. They’re the characters we love to hate, and 2015 delivered some juicy ones.

Peggy Blumquist - Fargo

Season two of Fargo might not have had as clear cut a villain as the evil Lorne Malvo, played by Billy Bob in season one, but just like the original Coen brothers movie, in the Fargo universe the villains are a hapless bunch. Aw jeez, just because Peggy seems sweet and “Minnesota nice” on the surface, doesn’t mean she is.

Best evil quote: “I’m trying to stay positive. That’s one thing. If you spend any time with me, you’ll see. Positive Peggy is what they call me.”

Ramsay Bolton – Game of Thrones

Westeros is not short on villainous characters, but none are as maniacal as the sadistic Ramsay. He makes the evil Joffrey look like a fluffy kitten in comparison. The infamous rape scene with Sansa had many prominent commentators declaring themselves “done” with Game of Thrones once and for all.

Best evil quote: "If you think this has a happy ending, you haven't been paying attention."

Paul Spector - The Fall

Seriously, how could anyone possibly crush on Jamie Dornan as Christian Grey in Fifty Shades of Grey after seeing him as DSI Stella Gibson’s nemesis - the twisted manipulative murderer in The Fall? The characters do seem to have a bit in common – they’re both sadistic misogynists. We prefer the version where he’s the one in handcuffs though.

Best evil quote: "No one knows what's going on in someone else's mind. And life would be intolerable if we did."

The Underwoods – House of Cards

Washington’s menacing power couple Frank and Claire Underwood are a perplexing pair. They’re clearly the show’s protagonists but they’re so devious and cunning. You can’t help but rooting for them but also feeling guilty while you do!

Best evil quote: “If we never did anything we shouldn’t do, we’d never feel good about doing the things we should.” – Frank Underwood.

Pablo Escobar - Narcos

Again, in many ways the real-life drug lord is actually the protagonist of the show – which is exactly why the show has been condemned by many Columbians for glorifying what was a dark and bloody chapter in their country’s history.

Escobar’s extravagances and acts of evil are so obscenely excessive though that you almost can’t help rooting for the guy. At times it seems the underdog US DEA agents don’t stand a chance of bringing down his empire. It’s hard to comprehend just how much power this criminal held over his country and government.

Best evil quote: “The purpose of war is peace.”

Piper Chapman - Orange is the New Black

She might have started out as the sweet, innocent one in season one but come season three, she’s transformed into the linchpin of an illegal underground prison operation – and she’s not afraid to unleash her vengeance onto those that have been disloyal to her.

Best evil quote: “Trust no bitch”.

Tarek - The Principal

Tarek is a high school kid with some major problems – and is not so much evil as a victim of some very tough circumstances. Still, breakout star Rahel Romahn plays him with such an intense ferocity we wouldn’t want to have to come up against him in the playground, or have to discipline him in our classroom!

Best evil quote: (To the new principal on his first day) “Who the fuck are you?”

The Wolves - The Walking Dead

In a world where everyone is out to get you it would seem that Rick and co have no shortage of nemeses. Things stepped up a notch in 2015 with the introduction of the menacing Wolves. Made all the more scary perhaps by their elusiveness.  although it’s believed that 2016 will introduce perhaps the show’s most evil villain yet. Negan, who appeared in issue 100 of the comics, is set to be played by veteran actor Jeffrey Dean Morgan.

Best evil quote: Not a quote FROM them but perhaps the warning written on the wall at the end of season five was the most chilling part: “Wolves not far”

Kilgrave - Jessica Jones

The nerd universe was sent into a frenzy earlier this year when it was revealed that none other than Doctor Who – aka David Tennant would be playing supervillain Kilgrave in the highly anticipated Netflix adaptation of the Marvel comic favourite. He certainly didn’t fail to enthrall!

Best evil quote: “I'm the only one who matches you... who challenges you... who'll do anything for you."

Tyrell Wellick - Mr Robot

Senior Vice President of Technology at the antagonistic E Corp, the malevolent Wellick’s ambition knows no bounds (and continues the trope of the “evil bisexual”). Newcomer, the Swedish actor Martin Wallstrom, portrays his chilling and sociopathic tendencies so expertly he’s sure to become a breakout star.

Best evil quote: “Give a man a gun and he'll rob a bank. Give a man a bank and he'll rob the world.”
