Whether you’re ready or not, it’s sexy time.

There’s a saying: “A bad day fishing is better than a good day at work”. The same can be said about sex. There’s no such thing as bad sex. Even when it’s bad, it’s better than no sex. That’s why it’s called sex. It just is.

The same thing can also be said about sex documentaries. While some are technically more competent or flashier than others, they’re still about sex, which means they trump pretty much anything else on TV at the moment. That is, unless there’s another doco about sex at the moment, in which case it becomes a “Sophie’s choice” and you’re on your own, sorry.

Another great thing about sex docos is that SBS On Demand provides an entire library of them. Like an eager and willing partner, they are ready for you right now, wanting to be streamed over and over again until you can stream no more.

Here are some highlights:

1. Sex Diaries

Moses and Kitty make a nice bit of money sharing their sex lives online. And they are not alone. More and more couples are opting to share their sex lives with an audience. The question is why. Is it the money? Is it the attention? Is it the control? Most importantly is it healthy for a couple to stream their sex lives? This intimate portrait of regular folks breaking societal norms and taboos has other couples wondering how many online “hits” their sex life would get. Also, would it be enough to sell banner ads?

2. Scarlett Road: A Sexworker’s Journey

Australian sex worker Rachel helps clients with disabilities to experience sex on a regular basis. This fascinating documentary follows the relationships Rachel has with several clients, including those essentially “trapped” by Cerebral Palsy and Multiple Sclerosis. To some, Rachel’s “calling” is simply that of a fetishist living out a twisted fantasy. But to others, Rachel is a beacon of hope, sharing herself with those who only know neglect and who are starving for much-needed human touch from someone other than a care giver.

3. Sex in the World’s Cities

If you’ve ever been to Rio De Janeiro, then you know how sexy a city can get. If you’ve ever been to Rio De Janeiro during Carnival, then chances are you’re not actually reading this, but belly up in a hammock in Ipa Nima Beach with a Caipirinha in your hand. This sweaty, sexy documentary strips off the bikini top and exposes the most titillating facts about those who live in the “city of sex”.

4. Confessions of a Male Stripper

Before you ask, this is something I only do for fun. That said, there are many men who enjoy shedding their skivvies for money. There are also just as many women (and then some) who pay good money to see said men shedding their skivvies. David Richards is the owner of Dreamboys, the biggest male stripping agency in town, and he’s on the lookout for “fresh meat” to add to his roster. Who will make the cut? Who cares, there’s way too much fun to have behind the scenes of this sex-fuelled doco that will make most men think about renewing that gym membership.

5. Sex Box

If the title isn’t enough to entice you, then you need to see a doctor. There is very little left to the imagination here, folks. Three couples have sex, then talk about it immediately afterwards when they are at their most emotionally truthful and open. The audience gets to snicker and giggle while couples cry their eyes out. Everyone wins.

6. Insight: Good Old Sex

Did you know your grandparents had sex? I was curious about this one, and rightly so. Old people are having sex. A lot of it. Some with multiple partners... at the same time. Before you say “ew”, award winning journalist Jenny Brockie has an open and candid conversation with seniors about sexuality. She even convinces them to pantomime their favourite sexual positions on stage (win!). And why not? If you ask me, old people should be having more sex. Especially if it keeps them from driving in the wrong lane with their blinker on.

7. Dateline: Sex Mountain

Central Java’s Mount Kemukus is home to “Sex Mountain”, a holy site visited by Muslims not just looking to pray, but to seek out crazy amounts of sex in order to experience divine intervention. This custom has sprung an entire industry of sex workers looking to cash in on people’s faith. The doco attempts to make sense of this legend: A Javanese Prince sleeps with his step mother on the mountain. They get caught and are killed and buried in what is now the shrine. Today, devotees must have sex on the mountain every 35 days. This act must be repeated 7 times in order to get their “blessings”. As if the act itself isn’t blessing enough.

8. Fat Girls and Feeders

You name it, there’s a fetish for it. This one has a title that pretty much explains it. This is the story of “Fat Girls” and the men (”Feeders”) who admire them. But that’s just the tip of this triple chocolate sundae. Feeders find themselves sexually satisfied by the thought of not only “growing” their women to massive, even life-threatening sizes, but relish in the cruel and subversive way that they accomplish this. This doco not only toys with the notion of “strange bedfellows”, it will also make you think twice about that second helping of spaghetti on your next date night.

9. My Boyfriend the Sex Tourist

There are vacations and then there are VACATIONS. This unique and eye-opening doco tells the story of young women working in an all-inclusive resort in Venezuela. And when we say “all inclusive” we mean exactly that. The women are included. Resort guests arrive, choose their girl (or girls) from a buffet line of flesh and get to work doing absolutely nothing but having these lovely locals tend to them like hedonistic gods. Of course, “behind the scenes” the girls are telling it like it is.

10. Is Porn Ruining Your Life? (The Feed)

If you’ve come this far, then this one is a bonus. You’ll have to check it out to confirm (or ease) your worst fears if you’ve lost the “tingle in your dingle”.
