Whether you know Titus Welliver as Titus Welliver, or as that guy in black from the confusing part of Lost, or as that visiting stooge from Deadwood, or as the guy with the sinister moustache from Gone Baby Gone, you should catch-up and start calling him Bosch. Especially now that Amazon has green-lit Bosch for a third season.
Word has it that when Welliver heard the news, improvised saxophone sounded out of nowhere as he leaned back in his car-seat, rasped out “cancelled? The only thing that’ll cancel Bosch is the business end of a bullet”, then drove off into the unforgiving streets of the Los Angeles night.
If, for you, the word Bosch conjures the following image…
Then it’s time to develop a new association, as you’re missing an above-average cop drama developed by one of The Wire’s core writers. A well-written series that finds its way under your skin, the show is plotted like a good whodunit. Yet it never feels done, partly as it’s handled with such a convincing level of idiosyncrasy and detail, and partly due to Welliver’s ability to breathe new life into the rebellious-detective-forever-teetering-on the-edge-of-a-downward-spiral.
Maybe that freshness is partly due to the jazz. Bosch loves a bit of free jazz (it’s smooth and unpredictable just like Bosch) which, when combined with Welliver’s rasp, creates an almost hypnotic effect.
The renewal could be seen as a surprise, not because it is, but because Amazon doesn’t release its viewership figures, so who-the-flaming-kilobyte knows.
Congratulations to all involved. We look forward to another year of trying to turn “Bosch” into an adjective.
This photo is so Bosch.
