Popular music’s pre-eminent enigma is no longer with us, and he leaves behind an unparalleled legacy – one of virtuosity and mystery and sexy music.

In recent times, reports of Prince’s eccentricity have littered the Internet, most famously in Kevin Smith’s brief, and confusing entry into the superstar’s private world. (Knowing the indie director’s love of telling a good elongated yarn, it should be taken with a grain of salt.)

One of Prince’s last surprises came in an appearance on the Zooey Deschanel-helmed New Girl, where he was featured in an entire episode, appropriately titled “Prince”.

We’re sure many of you have heard of the episode, but the story of how it came to pass is even more entertaining.

Mr. Rogers Nelson contacted the stars and creators of the fun and fluffy comedy series, expressing his encyclopedic knowledge of the show. As if this wasn’t enough to lift any artist’s spirits, he went on to ask to appear in an episode.

But here was Prince’s catch – his appearance had to, in some way, bring Jess (Zooey) and Nick (Jake Johnson) together.

In fact, Prince was so attuned to Jess that he saw exactly how his appearance could bring out something new in the character. He even insisted on poking fun at his enigmatic reputation.

It was a fun, random and memorable appearance that ended, of course, with a funky Prince number.

The experience clearly made an impression on the New Girl cast and crew.

Here’s a tweet from Jake Johnson:

And here’s one from the show’s creatorElizabeth Meriwether.

To take us out, here’s Chappelle’s affectionate celebration of the mystique of Prince.

Every episode of New Girl is now streaming at SBS On Demand.
