There was an unexpected awakening for the audience of the 2017 Eurovision Song Contest. Midway through "Hey Mamma", we all remembered how much we love the saxophone. Awakening us from a collective coma, the exuberant sax has become the real star of this years song contest.

Naturally, we have some questions.

Who is the epic sax guy?

He has a name. Sergey Stepanov is the saxophonist for SunStroke Project, the band representing Moldova this year at Eurovision. He used to work with fellow band member Anton Ragoza (the violinist in the group) in the army together. The inspiration for the name of the band came from the sunstroke Anton got while working in the field with Sergey.

Has he sax'd at Eurovision before?

SunStroke Project performed at Eurovision back in 2010. When their performance was first uploaded to YouTube, he became known as the 'epic sax guy' as the video started going viral.

Just how excited is Twitter that Epic Sax Guy is back?

Obviously, very.

What is the song "Hey Mamma" even about?

The titular “mamma” is an overprotective mother preventing a young man from having fun with her daughter. These are the lyrics to this ridiculously fun song:

Hey, hey you
You will never hide what you think of me
I see your clue
Know, you worry, but it don’t meant to be
Hey, hey you
It’s your girl and maybe should sleep at home
But I’ll steal her alone.

And I say…
Mamma, mamma, don’t be so down
I am not that unfounded boy
Mamma, mamma don’t be so down
All it keeps going round and round
Mamma, mamma, don’t be so mad
If you knew me, you’d be surprised
Mamma, mamma, don’t be so mad
She’ll be back home till sunrise

Like the sun in the sea
She will disappear tonight with me
And I will not anymore
Do what other guys did before

Hey, hey you
It’s your girl and maybe should sleep at home
But I’ll steal her alone

And I say…
Mamma, mamma, don’t be so down
I am not that unfounded boy
Mamma, mamma don’t be so down
All it keeps going round and round
Mamma, mamma, don’t be so mad
If you knew me, you’d be surprised
Mamma, mamma, don’t be so mad
She’ll be back home till sunrise

Can I follow Sergey on social media?

While there are several accounts set up, Sergey isn't currently tweeting or posting anywhere that we can see.

You can see Epic Sax Guy be generally epic again tonight for the grand final of the 2017 Eurovision Song Contest at 7:30pm on SBS and streaming via SBS On Demand.
