Atlanta and The Handmaid's Tale are considered frontrunners with multiple nominations after winning in key categories at last year's Emmy Awards.

The nominations are in for 2018's 70th Primetime Emmy Awards, with The Handmaid's Tale and Atlanta both heavily represented. Presented by The Handmaid's Tale actress Samira Wiley and Ryan Eggold, the nominations were revealed overnight in Los Angeles.

Overall, Game of Thrones led nominations with 22, followed with 21 nominations each for SNL and Westworld. HBO, which for the past 17 years has led in the number of nominations received, was this year overtaken by Netflix.

The 70th Primetime Emmy Awards will be held on 17 September 2018 (18 September local-time) and will be co-hosted by SNL's Colin Jost and Michael Che.

The Handmaid's Tale

Following on from last year's triumphant debut at the Emmy Awards, The Handmaid's Tale is again a leader with the number of nominations it has received this year. Following its win last year for Outstanding Drama Series, the show is again nominated in that category. Elisabeth Moss, who last year won Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series is again nominated, to the surprise of no one who has been watching the stellar work she delivers in every episode.

After winning last year in the Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series category, Alexis Bledel was this year nominated in the Supporting Actress in a Drama Series category where she is up against co-stars Ann Dowd and Yvonne Strahovski. Last year, Ann Dowd won in the category. 

Joseph Fiennes has been nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series.

This year in the Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series category, Cherry Jones (Holly Osbourne), Samira Wiley (Moira), and Kelly Jenrette (Annie) are each nominated. 

Kari Skogland was nominated for Outstanding Directing For a Drama Series for the episode After. Last year Reed Morano won this award for the episode Offred.

Series showrunner Bruce Miller was nominated for Outstanding Writing in a Drama Series for the episode June. Last year he won for the episode Offred.

The series has also received nominations for Outstanding Production Design For a Narrative Contemporary Program for episodes June, Seeds, First Blood, and After.

Colin Watkinson has been nominated for Outstanding Cinematography For a Single Camera Series. He won this award last year also.

Atlanta

The series has been nominated for Outstanding Comedy Series, which it lost to the returning favourite Veep. This year Veep has not been nominated.

Donald Glover was again nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, having won in this category last year. Glover has also been nominated for Outstanding Writing in a Comedy Series (for the episode Alligator Man) and is again nominated for Outstanding Directing in a Comedy Series (for the episode FUBU), which he also won in 2017.

Glover is also nominated for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series for guest-hosting SNL.

His nomination for Outstanding Writing in a Comedy Series wasn't the only nomination in that category with Stefani Robinson also nominated for the episode Barbershop.

In addition to Glovers nomination for Outstanding Directing in a Comedy Series, Hiro Murai was also nominated for the series stand-out episode Teddy Perkins

Bryan Tyree Henry, who plays Paper Boi was nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. Zazie Beets, who plays Van, was nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series.

Katt Williams received an Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series nomination for playing Willy. 

Full Frontal with Samantha Bee

The series has again received nominations in the Outstanding Writing in a Comedy Series, Outstanding Directing in a Comedy Series, Outstanding Interactive Program, and Outstanding Writing For a Variety Special (for its special Puerto Rico special).

The Good Fight

Singer Jonathan Coulton received a nomination for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics for his song High Crimes And Misdemeanors, featured in the episode Day 450. 

The Fourth Estate

The compelling series taking viewers behind the scenes at the New York Times was nominated for Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Series.

The Vietnam War

Ken Burns phenomenal documentary series was nominated in the Outstanding Directing For a Documentary/Non-Fiction Program category.

South Park

Once again, South Park has been nominated for Outstanding Animated Program.
