Angela Merkel visits Africa to urge a halt to refugee influx into Europe

In a move aimed at cutting migration numbers, German chancellor Angela Merkel has pledged more financial help to Niger to back its fight against human traffickers and militants.Ms Merkel has met the country's president for talks on the second day of a three-country trip to Africa.Darren Mara reports.

German chancellor Angela Merkel has pledged millions of dollars in financial help to one of the world's poorest countries, Niger.

The move comes as Ms Merkel visits Mali, Niger and Ethiopia in a three-day tour aimed at working towards curbing future migration waves.

An influx of almost a million migrants and refugees into Germany last year has badly damaged her popularity at home.
