End of Story, anew song by Gungarri woman Kelly Loui seeks to raise awareness about domestic abuse and encourage victims to take control and break the vicious cycle of violence.
Kelly Loui explains that End of Story aims to draw awareness about the scourge of domestic violence and provide support to the victims.
The song was inspired by regular occurrences in both Kelly Loui's professional and personal lives.
“I currently work with vulnerable families that are experiencing domestic violence. It is such a big issue for them.”
The Gungarri woman also drew inspiration from recent studies and her realisation that perpetrators are themselves victims of a vicious cycle of social pressures resulting from our patriarchal society.
She also observed that domestic violence is one of the corollaries of intergenerational trauma. “I have some lived experience of domestic violence being Indigenous, there is also some sort of stuff around our relationships and what is healthy and what is not.”
Kelly Loui added that we really need to come together and talk about domestic violence so we can understand it better.
“End of story is a song that empowered me. It is about no more and it was about that cycle of abuse that went on, and on, and on for a few years and once I became aware of what was actually happening I could step back and actually go, ‘no, this is not okay.’”
