The Australian Assyrian arts and Literature foundation and Beth-Nahrain Assyria Association are celebrating the Assyrian New year 6770 at the Victorian Parliament house in Melbourne.
One of the event's organisers, Councillor Joseph Haweil told SBS that this is the first time Assyrian community in Victoria is doing things differently and are celebrating the Assyrian new year away from picnics and outdoor settings.
Assyrian community will experience the beauty of the Parliament house and enjoy a carefully arranged program.
Mr Haweil asserts that doing things and sharing our celebration in such way will help to show the Australians the Assyrian identity, culture and political situation.
He says that because there is no Parliament sitting in April, therefor we had no other window opportunity to hold the celebration at other date and sixteenth of March was the only date available.
The program will have speeches by MPs and members of Assyrian organisations. Also there will be Assyrian folk dance and an exhibition about the Assyrian history.
Councillor Haweil concluded that it is important for Assyrian community to get out of it's isolation and join the Australian community in general and we should share our celebrations and culture with all communities.
