In March 2021 ASIO boss Mike Burgess said that extremist groups are fuelling the spread of views which among other things blame western democracy and multi-culturalism for the impending collapse of society. On 24 November the federal government announced that it would list such a group, known as The Base, as a terrorist organisation. It also added the whole of Hizballah to the list. Are security risks to our multi-cultural society changing?
Greg Barton, Research Professor and Chair of Global Islamic Politics at the Alfred Deakin Institute at Deakin University explains to Sri Dean the characteristics of The Base and Hizballah, why the government chose to list them as terrorist organisations and what we need to do to combat the new breed of extremists.
