Film and Politics in Tamil Nadu – Vijayakanth (Part 1)

From Film Theatre to Fort St. George,​examines the case of actor-politician Vijayakanth, who is one of the three leading Chief-Ministerial candidates in the lead-up to the Tamil Nadu election 2016. Vijaykanth, who was nicknamed Captain following his role in the film Captain Prabhakaran (1991). He is perhaps the only Tamil politician who has been an object of incessant criticism and overwhelming ridicule; nonetheless, almost all political parties (including the ruling BJP Party) tried to get him in their alliance but in vain.This episode examines the socio-cultural context and cinematic circumstances out of which Vijayakanth emerged to become an alternative force in Tamil Nadu politics. With a career spanning more than 150 films, actor-politician Vijayakanth was the Leader of the Opposition in the Tamil Nadu State Assembly, and the founder of a political party, National Progressive Dravidian Federation (Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kalagam known as DMDK).
