First Australian citizenship given to Czechoslovak Jan Jandura Pucek

John Jandura

Jan Jandura Pucek was the first foreigner who got Australian citizenship. It was in 1949, but Jan Jandura arrived to Australia 10 years earlier to earn some money on eucalyptus distillation. Leaving his wife in Czechoslovakia, things went unexpectedly. During the war period they exchanged only a couple of letters, but after all she arrived to Australia as well. It was in 1949, just after the communists won the elections in Czechoslovakia. She saw her 10-years unseen husband for the first time in Melbourne while sailing to Sydney, when she got a Newspaper with his photo from the Citizenship ceremony in Canberra. Now, his son John Jandura gives us more interesting details on this remarkable story in Interview SBS Czech.
